---
Believe it or not, I running out of pictures to post!
Fear not, I have a lot of flower and plant shots, but not much else. To mix it up, I'm going to repost some of my older pictures using better software and skills than I had when these were originally made.
In this case, the major change was the crop. Other than some minor tone changes and vignetting, there wasn't anything else.

Instrument Envy
I always envied the flute and piccolo players. Their instruments weighed next to nothing. Heck, the piccolo players could put them in their pockets at the end of the parade. I, however had to lug this stupid, heavy, baritone sax around which really was only good for playing the Pink Panther theme.

The Last Shot
As we were leaving Yellowstone (heading to the north entrance), this was the last image that presented itself. And it's the last shot from our trip. Well, there was this picture of a plane I took at the Bozeman airport, but I always take pictures of planes at airports, so that doesn't count.
Anyway, thanks for enduring.

Union Pacific X-18
Union Pacific operated the largest fleet of gas turbine-electric locomotives (GTELs) of any railroad in the world. The prototype, UP 50, was the first in a series built by General Electric for Union Pacific's long-haul cargo services and marketed by the Alco-GE partnership until 1953. The prototype was introduced in 1948 and was followed by three series of production locomotives. At one point, Union Pacific said, GTELs hauled more than 10% of the railroad's freight.
Fuel economy was poor, for the turbine consumed roughly twice as much fuel as an equally powerful diesel engine. This was initially not a problem, because Union Pacific's turbines burned Bunker C heavy fuel oil that was less expensive than diesel. But this highly viscous fuel is difficult to handle, with a room-temperature consistency similar to tar or molasses. To solve this problem, a heater was built into the fuel tanks (and later into fuel tenders) to heat the fuel to 200 °F (93 °C) before feeding it into the turbine. Eventually UP switched from Bunker C to modified No. 6 heavy fuel oil, which contained fewer pollutants and solvents. Soot buildup and blade erosion caused by corrosive ash plagued all of the turbines. Changes to the air intake systems on the production turbine locomotives improved the quality of the air that reached the turbines, which in turn reduced the wear to the turbine blades and increased the turbine's running life. The GTELs were operated into late 1969 and the final two (numbers 18 and 26) were stored at the Cheyenne roundhouse in operating condition until being retired in February 1970.

The Store on Bullshit Corner
While I was taking this, a local pulled up and told me the story of this corner. This used to be a general store and the old geezers would sit around the the pot-bellied stove and shoot the breeze. Combine this with the VFW that was across the street and you now have the reason for the name of this intersection.

Homage to Ansel - San Francisco de Asis Mission Church
[from the archives]
Imagine my delight and surprise when we pulled into the parking area behind the church and I recognized this scene from an image by the master, Ansel Adams.
http://shop.anseladams.com/Saint_Francis_Church_p/1501139.htm
At the time, I didn't remember the exact picture, but I had to give it a try, merely as an homage. Then, when I looked it up later, I found that I had gotten the angle just about right. I've cropped it similarly to Ansel's. There have been some changes to the church - the adobe is...smoother. I'm guessing it's been patched and restored numerous times. The clouds are very different, his foreground was cleaner, and there's more contrast in his picture. But the shadow is falling almost exactly as it was when AA shot it. I'll be happy to show this one to da man some day.
This is a beautiful church and is often painted and photographed. In fact, when we got there on a Friday, there were four other photographers present. And the interior is cool, just like adobe structures are supposed to be. They expressly prohibit interior photography though. Before we left, Kate lit a candle for a Catholic friend.
---
San Francisco de Asis Mission Church is a church built between 1772 and 1816. It is located on the plaza in Ranchos de Taos, itself a historic district named Ranchos de Taos Plaza, about four miles southwest of the town of Taos, New Mexico.

"Where shall we hang this, dear?" (redux)
This is a repost of a picture on Flickr from 10 years ago. I tweaked it a little and thought it was worthy of a repost.
This is what results from a bunch of nerdy photographers getting overly creative while hyped up on Diet Coke. It's one of many weird pictures from a portrait jam meetup over 10 years ago..
While I pushed the button, this was a joint composition of Linda and Chuck.
Lynn was wearing a black turtleneck against a dark background. With a careful adjustment of contrast, and nothing else, this picture is what resulted.

Montana 2018
Kate and I traveled to Montana the week of the Fourth. Never again! The national parks were way too crowded and lodging and the rental car were expensive.
We visited her college roommate in Great Falls, then drove up through Glacier National Park to Kalispell, then down to Yellowstone National Park - all in one week. Lots of rushing, not much relaxing. But I got a few nice pictures.
So, first of all, here is a link to all of the pictures where they appear first - on Flickr. Keep coming back, I add a couple of pictures a day, and there are a lot of pictures. As of this writing, there are 27 pictures posted so far. And I'm posting a couple every day. So this could take a while.
And I'll post my favorites on this blog. Here are a few so far.
As I add my favorites on here, I'll tag them with Montana 2018

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
