Amtrak Train 29 - The Capitol Limited

e061015-18c085a-wb

I was doing a two-week swing in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylania, and drove there from Chicago. On the way, I stopped in Harpers Ferry to do a little train photography (who cares about that history stuff?!?). Back in August, a guy at the Folkston Funnel turned me on to this spot.

On Sunday, my first attempt, it didn't turn out well. I hung around for a couple of hours, and only one train appeared and it showed up when I wasn't anywhere near a shooting spot. Later I realized, after my seminar in Frederick, Maryland on Wednesday, I'd be only 30 minutes from Harpers Ferry.

Since the weather was cooperative, I made a second attempt that evening to meet the westbound Amtrak train at 5:06pm. I got there with about 20 minutes to spare. I also had a chance to talk with some folks who were waiting for the train. They were going to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center north of Chicago for their son's (and grandson's) graduation. So I congratulated them and asked them to pass on my thanks to their son. They were real nice, salt-of-the-earth type folks. And clearly very proud.

Finally, the train showed up and was I able to get a couple of decent pictures of the train coming out of the tunnel on the Maryland side of the Potomac River with some nice, late afternoon sun. Which was my objective.

I love it when a plan comes together.

The World's Best Chocolate Cake

122684090_a6e5c36901_o

Portillo's, a terrific hot dog/Italian beef/hamburger restaurant chain in the Chicago area also serves up the best chocolate cake ever.  I know this because I'm constantly on the hunt for a better cake, but I've never found it (and I have the stomach to prove it).  I've heard the secret ingredient is mayonaise.

For complete decadence, try the shake.  They take a piece of cake, drop into the mixer and turn it into a shake.  ohhh  gawd!

Robert Wadlow

Robert Wadlow

Robert Wadlow was Alton, Illinois' major claim to fame - he was (and still holds the record for being) the tallest man who ever lived.  He was 8ft, 11.1 inches tall.  This statue is LIFE SIZE and is located in Alton.  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wadlow

For purposes of scale, I'm (on a good day, with low barometric pressure and humidity and with a song in my heart) about 6'2"

IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT STEALING THIS PICTURE, STOP THINKING.  THIS PICTURE IS COPYRIGHTED.  NO PERMISSION IS GRANTED FOR ITS USE.  THERE ARE PLENTY OF PICTURES OUT THERE YOU CAN USE.  SEARCH FOR THEM.  OR GO TO ALTON AND TAKE YOUR OWN PICTURE.  BUT YOU MAY NOT USE THIS ONE.

The M1911 is a single-action, semiautomatic handgun chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It was designed by John M. Browning, and was the standard-issue side arm for the United States armed forces from 1911 to 1985, and is still carried by some U.S. forces. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Its formal designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 for the original Model of 1911 or Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the M1911A1, adopted in 1924. The designation changed to Pistol, Caliber .45, Automatic, M1911A1 in the Vietnam era. In total, the United States procured around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols during its service life.
