Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Heron

Stchuck and I were at the Batavia dam this afternoon and we photographed this very cooperative Great Blue Heron.  This shot was at about 170mm and is not cropped from the sides - I took a little off the top.  I don't think I've ever been this close to a GBHE, certainly not while he knew I was there.  I'm guessing that, since this area is full of fishermen, this bird is a little more comfortable with people.

Green, Red and White Mailboxes.  Oh, and a Tree.

This was one of those scenes where you drive by and then realize you just have to take a picture.  Kate spotted it at the same time.

Bigger and better version here

Worthy of note - if you go to the map on Google and check the street view, you'll see this tree, the mailboxes, etc.  maps.google.com/maps?q=36.30131167,-105.74611167&spn=...

Big Red One

Big Red One

The 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army is the oldest division in the United States Army.  It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917.  It was officially nicknamed the The Big Red One after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed The Fighting First.  However, with typical soldier gallows humor, the division has also received troop monikers of The Big Dead One and The Bloody First as puns on the respective officially-sanctioned nicknames.  It is currently based at Fort Riley, Kansas. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Infantry_Division_%28United_Sta...

Sublette Bunk House

Sublette Bunk House

Sublette is a section station built in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad at milepost 306 on its narrow gauge San Juan Extension from Antonito, Colorado to Durango, Colorado. When the D&RGW finally abandoned its narrow gauge lines in the late 1960s, two parts of the system were preserved independently: the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad from Antonito to Chama, New Mexico (including Sublette), and the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

A section station serves as a base for the crew that maintains the track for the railroad. The buildings on site are a section house for the foreman and his family, two bunkhouses for the section crew, a coal bunker, a speeder shed and water tower. (Wikipedia)
