I found myself up early this morning, and I realized that I had a chance at some dawn pictures. One that I've had on my list for a while was this building. Tom Henneman recently posted a picture similar to what I had envisioned, so that was what I decided to try. Luckily, the clear skies held long enough for me to fire a few shots. Also fortunate was that I didn't stop for coffee and a donut before I got to the site, because I would have lost the sun. As it is, these came out OK.
I've posted two shots here...a three-quarter view for which I've uploaded the full-sized version (with lots of watermarks) so any architecture buffs can inspect the building in some detail. The other is my more artsy-craftsy treatment at my normal upload size. In this latter shot, I've also retouched out the car parked in front.
The Campana Building was built 1936 by Frank D. Chase of Childs and Smith. The architectural styles mentioned are Art Deco, Bauhaus and Art Moderne (I don't know Art Deco from Victorian).
It was built as a cosmetics factory. Note the glass block windows which are great for an industrial operation, but not for just about anything else (like offices or retail). This makes for a facility that is tough to fully utilize. The factory moved out decades ago.

The West Suburban Chicago Flickrers have a monthly contest and this month, it's "solstice". I talked with a Druid friend about how he celebrated the solstice, and he said he would go to a high point and watch the sunset.
OK, so Chicago suburbs...where the heck to find such a spot with a western facing view?
Stchuck was indulgent enough to make the climb to the summit of Mount Hoy with me, at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Winfield, Illinois to make the shots.
(Given the unreliability of the weather lately, we shot this a few days before the summer solstice, but you get the point.)

The Old Vicksburg Bridge is on the right and is a combined railroad and highway bridge. The highway is closed, replaced by the new bridge.

The Heinous Plant

We started noticing this really hideous plant growing by our garage. It looked horrible and all Kate kept saying was that the flower on this thing had better be worth it. It ain't bad. But it would be better sitting on top of a plant that wasn't so heinous.
