Campana Building

Campana Building, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

I found myself up early this morning, and I realized that I had a chance at some dawn pictures. One that I've had on my list for a while was this building. Tom Henneman recently posted a picture similar to what I had envisioned, so that was what I decided to try. Luckily, the clear skies held long enough for me to fire a few shots. Also fortunate was that I didn't stop for coffee and a donut before I got to the site, because I would have lost the sun. As it is, these came out OK.

I've posted two shots here...a three-quarter view for which I've uploaded the full-sized version (with lots of watermarks) so any architecture buffs can inspect the building in some detail. The other is my more artsy-craftsy treatment at my normal upload size. In this latter shot, I've also retouched out the car parked in front.

The Campana Building was built 1936 by Frank D. Chase of Childs and Smith. The architectural styles mentioned are Art Deco, Bauhaus and Art Moderne (I don't know Art Deco from Victorian).

It was built as a cosmetics factory. Note the glass block windows which are great for an industrial operation, but not for just about anything else (like offices or retail). This makes for a facility that is tough to fully utilize. The factory moved out decades ago.

Eastbound Union Pacific at Vail

The last time I was in Tucson, I visited the Union Pacific crossover bridge near Vail (southwest of Tucson) and got skunked on trains. So this time, when I visited Tucson, I tried again. And got lucky.

Watching the Summer Solstice

Watching the Summer Solstice, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

The West Suburban Chicago Flickrers have a monthly contest and this month, it's "solstice". I talked with a Druid friend about how he celebrated the solstice, and he said he would go to a high point and watch the sunset.

OK, so Chicago suburbs...where the heck to find such a spot with a western facing view?

Stchuck was indulgent enough to make the climb to the summit of Mount Hoy with me, at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Winfield, Illinois to make the shots.

(Given the unreliability of the weather lately, we shot this a few days before the summer solstice, but you get the point.)

Write it down

I try to collect as much information as I can when I shoot. I usually don't get what I should, but I try. This makes my picture more informational on Flickr and has more search terms and key words. I try to get exact names of things, locations (addresses and street intersections), nearest city, organizations involved, feature names, etc. It's always helpful to hold onto maps and brochures when you visit someplace.

What I learned from a portrait session recently

A friend allowed me to photograph him. I wanted a couple of portfolio shots...he needed a head shot for some social networking sites.

What I learned

1. Makeup isn't a bad thing...direct or reflected light from the flash made his skin a little shiny. We solved it by using the umbrella as a shoot-through.

2. Match backgrounds against clothes. I have a black background set up. He was wearing a black jacket. The shots wound up being a head floating in a sea of black. We solved this by finding a white wall.

3. Go for more differences between the ratios of the lighting I was lighting his face pretty evenly and then, by accident got a pretty good shot. I hate that it was by accident. And I only made one image with that lighting. Luckily it was a good expression on his face.

4. Use more interesting backgrounds. I can see now why they sell marbleized backgrounds. White is pretty boring.

5. The more lighting "specs" for lack of a better word, the better. Little sparkles might be another term.

Town Wharf at Kittery Point, Maine

I flew out to New England for the weekend before my seminars in Connecticut. This gave me an opportunity to nail three states that I didn't have pictures from. So, in this little upload, there are pictures from Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Yay! Only one state left. See if you can figure out what state I'm missing from this collection.

Unfortunately, the weather really, truly and verily sucked all day - overcast and rainy. But I like New England. Drive around for an hour or so, and you can cover a bunch of states.
