After the WSCF Meetup at Fabyan Forest Preserve, I decided to go back a few days later and attack these things with my macro lens, flash, tripod etc.
I don't know what they are, but they were on a trellis east of the Fabyan Villa just west of the gate.
If anyone know what they are, please sound off.

Checklist of things to look at before you push the button
I'll probably come up with more of these, but these are the things that should be checked just before the button is pushed....
1. ISO
2. M/A/S/P setting
3. Autofocus on or off
4. Background. A trick I've heard is to sweep around the edge of the frame looking for extraneous stuff. Also, sweep around the subjects themselves looking for the aforementioned extraneous stuff.
5. Consider adjusting the aperture to deal with background - go low to blur background. Consider using a wide aperture lens, like a 50mm f1.4 (which I wish I had done for a couple of shots).
6. Is the speed fast enough to capture the action and to avoid shake if I'm using off tripod (even if ON the tripod in some situations?
7. Where is the focus point.
