Playing the Steinway II

Playing the Steinway II, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

I had the opportunity to visit and photograph the Peoples Church of Chicago as part of my informal project of photographing Unitarian/Universalist churches. I was given a tour by the congregation's pianist. The building was originally called the Uptown Temple, designed by J.E.O. Pridmore, and was built in 1925.

Louisiana Treasure

Louisiana Treasure, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

I found these beads in a meeting room in Lafayette, Louisiana last week. It's amazing to me that the previous group left such valuable stuff behind. It's mine now! I can't wait for the Antiques Roadshow to come to town. I'm sure I'll make a bundle. I'm gonna get me a Nikon D3X with some of the money. Woo hoo!

Atchafalaya Swamp

Atchafalaya Swamp, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

I've gotten into the habit of stopping at the Atchafalaya Visitor Center whenever I'm driving Interstate 10 in Louisiana between Baton Rouge and Lafayette. It's a neat place with some interesting places to walk around, as well as a boat ramp where you can get a little closer to nature and infrastructure. Both of these shots were taken at the boat ramp - see map link. And it's in the middle of the Atchafalaya Swamp. Can't beat that.

This is a new sculpture that they've installed at the visitor center to commemorate the battle of Cantigny in WW1 and the "Black Lions", the 28th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Division, that bore the brunt of the fighting. The artist is Stephen Spears. Cantigny was the first American victory of World War 1

Ten days ago, I got some redpolls at this feeder. Today I got a nice picture of a Pine Siskin.

I like this feeder. Thanks, Jeff for putting this baby up!

Common Redpoll

Common Redpoll, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

Common Redpolls are really good finds for birders in the Chicago area. They only come this far south in the occasional winter and this is one of them. They are being seen all over. I have a birder friend at Cantigny, and he emailed me that these were coming to the thistle feeder near the visitor center. I had a chance to get over there this afternoon, and luckily, they were there. And let me get pretty close as well.

Kansas City Southern 4100 Eastbound Over the Mississippi River

After finishing up seminars in Alabama and Mississippi this week, I stayed over in Vicksburg before heading north and snagging some Mississippi River bridges on the way home. I've already photographed this bridge last summer, but I thought I'd try for some early morning light shots before departing. When I got there, the light really wasn't that special (for the bridges), but then I spotted the lights of this locomotive coming on to the bridge on the west side. I ran (well, I walked fast) down to a better spot to catch the train coming off of the bridge and managed to squeeze off a few shots. Railroad bridge shots are nice. Railroad bridge shots with a train are way better.

The Old Vicksburg Bridge is a cantilever bridge carrying one rail line (Kansas City Southern Railway) across the Mississippi River between Delta, Louisiana and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Until 1998, the bridge was open to motor vehicles and carried US 80 across the Mississippi River, though one road lane runs through the bridge for inspection by workers. Wikipedia
