IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

M1 Abrams
e080517e-nef021-5copy-wb
The M1 Abrams is a military tank produced in the United States. The M1 is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and commander of the 37th Armored Regiment.
It is a main battle tank, one well armed, heavily armored, and highly mobile offensive mainstay of modern armored ground warfare.[citation needed] Notable features of the M1 Abrams include the use of a powerful gas turbine engine, the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment for crew safety. It is one of the heaviest tanks in service, weighing in at close to 70 tons. - wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abrams_tank

M60 Patton
e080517e-nef024-7copy-wb
The M60 Patton was the fourth and last of the Patton series medium tanks of the U.S Army. The M60 served as the primary main battle tank of the Cold War, with models in service beginning in 1960 up through the 1990s. The newer model M60 was the U.S. Army's basic main battle tank stationed in Europe (Germany) and South Korea during the Cold War, while the older M48 Patton tanks were being deployed in Southeast Asia (Vietnam) from 1965 through 1975, by both the USMC and US Army. It was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries. The tank belongs to the Patton family of tanks, named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and one of the earliest American advocates for the use of tanks in battle. It was a further development of the M48 Patton tank. - wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M60_Patton

e080517e-nef007-3copy-wb
The M551 Sheridan was a light tank developed by the United States, named after Civil War General Philip Sheridan. It was designed to have both an air drop and swimming capability. It was armed with the MGM-51 Shillelagh gun-launched missile system. Production began in 1966, entering the US Army inventory in 1967. Under the urging of General Creighton Abrams, the US Commander of Military Forces in Vietnam at the time, the M551 was rushed into combat service in Vietnam in January 1969. Now retired from service, it saw extensive combat in Vietnam, and limited service in Operation Just Cause (Panama), and Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (Iraq). Illinois has an annual spring bird count every year on the second saturday in May. And as usual, we did Fermilab. We didn't see as many birds as we would have liked, mostly because all of our best birders were absent. But it was still nice to get out and lift the binoculars.

Batavia Bulldog
While driving to church today, we noticed that they were gearing up for the Batavia Loyalty Day Parade. We've lived in Batavia for 17 years and have never gone to the parade. And since I needed a picture-takin' fix, and it was a beautiful day, I thought I'd walk over to the route and have a look.
I shot 357 pictures (glad I have that 4 gig card), and this was the best. The Batavia Bulldogs Marching Band came around the corner from the marshaling area, and I just started snapping away at any kids who looked interesting.
I thing this girl saw me. I'm sure this look turned into a, "Who's that old geezer over there with the weird hat?" look a moment later, but at this point, it was the cutest smile I've seen in a while.

Dodging Thunderstorms

There was a line of thunderstorms running from Illinois through Texas on Friday, 5/2/08 when I was heading home to Chicago. Our little American Eagle was elegantly dodging the storms as she flew from from Shreveport, Louisiana to DFW (Dallas) where I connected after a long delay to Chicago. Got home about 2am.
