M47 Patton Medium Tank

M47 Patton Medium Tank, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

"The M47 Patton was the second tank of the Patton series, and one of the U.S Army's principal medium battle tanks of the Cold war with models in service from the early 1950s to the late 1980s. The tank belongs to the Patton family of tanks, named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and one of the earliest American advocates for the use of tanks in battle. It was a further development of the M46 Patton tank." "Used by 1st Division Troops during the occupation of Germany after WWII - main armament: 90mm gun - weight: 96000 pounds - crew: 5 - speed 30 MPH - range: 80 miles" - per informational plaque

Here are my pictures of the Exedra

In architecture, an exedra is a semicircular recess, often crowned by a half-dome, which is usually set into a building's facade. The original Greek sense (a seat out of doors) was applied to a room that opened onto a stoa, ringed with curved high-backed stone benches, a suitable place for a philosophical conversation. An exedra may also be expressed by a curved break in a colonnade, perhaps with a semi-circular seat.

The free-standing exedra, often originally supporting bronze portrait statues is a familiar type of Hellenistic structure, characteristically sites along sacred ways or in open places in sanctuaries such as at Delos or Epidauros; sometimes Hellenistic exedras were built in relation to a city's agora, as at Priene. Cooper's Hawk Stops by for Christmas Dinner

When you operate the complex of bird feeders that Kate does, you also wind up with a hawk feeder as well. This Cooper's Hawk (it IS a Coop, by the way) comes by periodically in search of the occasional clueless Dark-eyed Junco. And he's not very good at it. We have a few tailless birds coming to the feeder.

Today he was patient enough to allow me to set up my tripod, the 500mm Sigma and snap off about 70 pictures. Amazingly, this was number 17 of the 70. The red stick is a problem, but I was shooting from a nice clean window with no screen so I didn't have any other POV's. But the window was clean enough that I didn't lose too much detail - some contrast though. I had to boost that pretty significantly in CaptureNX.

Another problem with bird photography in general, and I found it to be a problem here as well, is auto-focus. With all the branches and twigs in the field of view, it was tough to get the focus on his face. That's why I shot 70 shots. ;-)

I've also posted this big. Note that the noise, at 1600 ISO is pretty acceptable. In fact, until I sharpened, you really couldn't even SEE any noise. And I really like having all those extra D90 pixels to play with (this was shot in landscape mode...I lopped off the sides).

Merry Christmas!

It's too freakin' cold...here's some Spring

A pasque flower (or pasqueflower) is a deciduous perennial that is found in short clumps in meadows and prairies of North America and Eurasia. The genus Pulsatilla includes about 30 species, many of which are valued for their finely-dissected leaves, solitary bell-shaped flowers, and plumed seed heads. The anthers are bright yellow and the purple bell consists of sepals.

In its tallgrass prairie habitat, it is one of the first plants to bloom in the spring, often before the late winter snows have thawed.

This genus is sometimes included as part of genus Anemone as subgenus Pulsatilla, and is also commonly known as the prairie crocus, wind flower, Easter Flower and meadow anemone. The pasque flower is the official state flower of South Dakota and the provincial flower of Manitoba. It also grows in limestone pastures in central and northern Europe and parts of Russia, and locally in southern England from where the Pasque / Parsk / Pask family takes its name.

Pasque refers to Easter (Passover) as the flower blooms around that time of year.

The Lion of Cantigny

The Lion of Cantigny, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

This is a new sculpture that they've installed at the visitor center to commemorate the battle of Cantigny in WW1 and the "Black Lions", the 28th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Division, that bore the brunt of the fighting. The artist is Stephen Spears. Cantigny was the first American victory of World War 1

I was leaving Cantigny Park late in the afternoon and noticed this statue. They hadn't even dedicated it yet so it was still on the ground and not on the pedestal. It's now oriented in a way, and elevated, so that I don't think this particular shot, with the background and light, can be taken again.

"I still got a grenade and a coupla rounds! Bring it ON!!!"

I went to the toy soldier show at Cantigny last weekend. As I was walking around, I thought it would be interesting to try a macro shot on one the miniatures. I found this guy for $6. I used two Nikon SB 600's remotely controlled by the master SB800 (didn't fire) - one camera left and the other camera right and above the soldier. Then I merged with the background shot I had on file and brushed in the weeds over the right foot. Came out OK for an obvious fake job.

NOTE: This soldier has earned his discharge. But rather than go to a VA hospital, he feels that he's lived to fight another day. I'd be happy to mail his papers to anyone who feels the need of one hell of a warrior. No waiver penalty.
