M47 Patton Medium Tank

M47 Patton Medium Tank, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

"The M47 Patton was the second tank of the Patton series, and one of the U.S Army's principal medium battle tanks of the Cold war with models in service from the early 1950s to the late 1980s. The tank belongs to the Patton family of tanks, named after General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and one of the earliest American advocates for the use of tanks in battle. It was a further development of the M46 Patton tank." "Used by 1st Division Troops during the occupation of Germany after WWII - main armament: 90mm gun - weight: 96000 pounds - crew: 5 - speed 30 MPH - range: 80 miles" - per informational plaque

Here are my pictures of the Exedra

In architecture, an exedra is a semicircular recess, often crowned by a half-dome, which is usually set into a building's facade. The original Greek sense (a seat out of doors) was applied to a room that opened onto a stoa, ringed with curved high-backed stone benches, a suitable place for a philosophical conversation. An exedra may also be expressed by a curved break in a colonnade, perhaps with a semi-circular seat.

The free-standing exedra, often originally supporting bronze portrait statues is a familiar type of Hellenistic structure, characteristically sites along sacred ways or in open places in sanctuaries such as at Delos or Epidauros; sometimes Hellenistic exedras were built in relation to a city's agora, as at Priene. The Lion of Cantigny

The Lion of Cantigny, originally uploaded by Jim Frazier.

This is a new sculpture that they've installed at the visitor center to commemorate the battle of Cantigny in WW1 and the "Black Lions", the 28th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Division, that bore the brunt of the fighting. The artist is Stephen Spears. Cantigny was the first American victory of World War 1

I was leaving Cantigny Park late in the afternoon and noticed this statue. They hadn't even dedicated it yet so it was still on the ground and not on the pedestal. It's now oriented in a way, and elevated, so that I don't think this particular shot, with the background and light, can be taken again.

Using Telephotos

I'm beginning to notice a couple of problems with using telephotos. I'll pass them on to you. I've got two that I use...I have a 28 to 300mm Tamron, and a 150 to 500 Sigma.

1. Heat and humidity - both of these are problems when shooting at long distances. If I'm trying to photograph a scene and it's more than 10 to 20 yards from me, I've noticed that there is a problem with a lack of definition. It's not the optics. It's not vibration. It's something that can't be overcome...the earth's atmosphere.

Solutions? Shoot on a cold, cloudy day to eliminate the humidity and heat rays. At least that's what I'll try to do. And shoot closer subjects. But recognize that if you're shooting a subject that is 100 yards away on a blazingly hot, sunny day in Chicago, it'll probably not be what you were hoping for.

2. Camera shake is the more obvious problem...I try to use a support whenever possible. And I use a shutter speed of at least twice, if not three times the focal length setting on the lens if I'm shooting handheld.

Clive Nichols’ “The Art of Flower & Garden Photography”

I just finished reading Clive Nichols’ “The Art of Flower & Garden Photography” 2007 and thought I would pass on a couple of things from the book, particularly ideas that kind of “hit” me when I read them.
First of all, the book is beautiful. This guy really is a terrific garden photographer. So just looking at the pictures is worthwhile. But in addition, the text synchronizes well with the pictures, and you don’t have to do a lot of page flipping back and forth to find the picture that matches the text and vice-versa.
Also, since it was written last year, the recommendations are current with the digital technology.
I got it from the Batavia Library and will be returning it in the next couple of days. So anyone in Batavia, or who’s part of that system can easily get the book.
So here are my take-aways:
1. Shoot at dawn. I always thought there wasn’t much difference, logically, between dawn and dusk - just that the light comes from a different direction. But what he clearly shows, and I never thought of, is that at dawn, there usually is a lot of moisture in the air that gives a much different quality to the light. At dusk, the moisture’s all gone and therefore you’ve got different light. Of course, the problem is getting up to shoot at dawn. And, from a practical standpoint, getting access to the garden could be a challenge as well.
2. Backlight by shooting towards the sun. This, of course, means the potential for flare. But he solves the problem by either putting the subject in the way of the sun, or by using another object, like a statue, overhang, wall, etc. to shield the lens from the light. I never really gave this much thought other than using my hand to block the light.
3. Use a polarizer to shoot once the sun is higher in the sky. If nothing else, it’ll probably make the sky a little bluer. What I’ve found is that scenics are dicey at this time of day, but I’ve still been able to get interesting macros, particularly with all that light helping to keep the lens stopped down for more depth of field.
4. I already knew that most garden photographers recommend shooting on cloudy days to get the richer, less contrasty colors. I kind of like the contrast though. But seeing his pictures, I can see why that’s a common recommendation. Certainly, a cloudy day isn’t going to keep me away anymore. Just watch the sky so you don’t get “blown out” and overexposed skies.
5. When it’s gray and dull, like winter, go for texture shots.
6. Look for strong contrasts between colors in the background and the subject. Watch for interesting combinations of complementary colors. And if the colors don’t contrast too much, look for differences in texture. He also makes great use of completely blurring the background (don’t even think of using the “B” word) to make the subject stand out.
7. Make abstracts using extreme close-ups (macro).
8. Frost!
9. Try to shoot on days with little wind…watch the weather. Shooting early in the morning and late in the afternoon can help since that’s often when the wind is lighter.
10. Use garden paths as a way of composing landscapes to draw the viewer into the photograph and to provide a unifying subject.
11. Fog!
12. Snow!
13. If it’s windy, try taking advantage of it by using a long shutter speed to make an abstract of a colorful scene.
14. People - if you’re photographing gardeners, photograph them in their gardens. Duh. I’ll have to try that with Kate.
Finally, consider SEVERE blurring. If you’ve got a colorful, but boring shot, blur the heck out of it using software to created an abstract.

Blow off the spiderwebs

One of the things I've started noticing as I take more macro shots, is that the flowers often have one or two spiderweb strands hanging off of them, which I don't notice until I see the shots on the big screen later. So, since I carry a blower anyway to clean my optics, I've start blowing the flower before I shoot it, to see if that'll clean up the webs as well as any other pieces of debris.

You have no depth of field

I've been taking some really tight macros, and one of the things that I can't overcome is that, if you're using a macro lens, and you're focusing as close as you can, even if you set that f-stop to 50, you're still only going to have about a centimeter of depth of field.

Transcontinental Railroad Trip - June-July 2008

After finishing up a seminar swing in Salt Lake City, and going to the American Birding Association convention on Saturday, I drove home to Chicago. There were three objectives...I wanted to see and photograph parts of Wyoming and Nebraska that I had never been to, I wanted to follow some of the Lincoln Highway, and I wanted to photograph Union Pacific trains along the historic transcontinental railroad.

Some of the trip was guided by my own research into railroad destinations, but mostly by a book by Brian Butko, "Greetings from the Lincoln Highway". This is an excellent book for anyone thinking about taking any part of this trip. It really turned me on to some neat stuff.

Details of the trip

I stayed in Cheyenne the first night (Sunday - 6/29/08), Grand Island on the second night (Monday - 6/30/08), and then streaked for home on Tuesday (7/1/08) with only a few stops.

One major stop that generated some great pictures was at the Cody Cody Park Railroad Museum in North Platte, Nebraska.

See all of the pictures from this trip (as they're posted).

Batavia Bulldog

Batavia Bulldog, originally uploaded by jimfrazier.

While driving to church today, we noticed that they were gearing up for the Batavia Loyalty Day Parade. We've lived in Batavia for 17 years and have never gone to the parade. And since I needed a picture-takin' fix, and it was a beautiful day, I thought I'd walk over to the route and have a look.

I shot 357 pictures (glad I have that 4 gig card), and this was the best. The Batavia Bulldogs Marching Band came around the corner from the marshaling area, and I just started snapping away at any kids who looked interesting.

I thing this girl saw me. I'm sure this look turned into a, "Who's that old geezer over there with the weird hat?" look a moment later, but at this point, it was the cutest smile I've seen in a while.

There are nice cars there. But my favorite picture is this interior shot. What a great auto showroom! This was the original plant where the cars were built. On the National Register of Historic Places
